Kitchen & Laundry Room in Walkerville

This kitchen is an outstanding example of the beauty and balance found when we fuse the two worlds of personal and professional together. The client for this project is not just an avid cook and host, but a professional chef with a passion for exquisite culinary experiences. So, they needed a space that would be able to balance the industrial equipment they love to use with the comfort and warmth of an inviting family home they want to spend time relaxing in.

The project’s use of materials aided the connection between work and home by incorporating warm and cool tones throughout. Timber tones like Laminex Calm Oak, Solid American Oak and the texture of ply brought in warmth and softness to some feature cabinetry including the island battening, open shelves and framed fridge feature surrounds. This created an interesting contrast to the solid black shadow lines and kickers with slightly cooler Laminex Pearl Grey to the main cabinetry frontals.

Design Features

  • The use of various finishes and textures also adds to the thoughtful space, a subtle textured natural soft sheen finish and a subtle grain texture to the cabinetry adds modern and warm elements while the Negresco Quartzite benchtops have a leathered finish which creates a tactile rustic feel to balance the cool smooth stainless-steel finishes.
  • The kitchen came together beautifully, with custom lighting, integrated fridges, and sleek push-to-open cabinets. The result is a welcoming space designed for gathering and creating.
  • The laundry room on this project is truly one of a kind. While many homes keep to a simple and purely functional layout in the laundry, this project combines a layered approach to cabinetry with outstanding quality of craftsmanship to make this space one you want to linger in.
  • This laundry features stacked appliances in a stunning hoop pine ply frame, a hanging rail elevated above the bench for freshly ironed items, built in laundry hampers for sorting and tall storage for brooms, ironing boards and the handy stick vacuum. But in this space, these are just the basics. The standout feature is the lowline seat with drawer storage that appears to float within its beautiful, beveled plywood frame. High above there is ample storage, deepened at this height to increase storage capacity without encroaching on the precious floor space.

Design Obstacles

  • One of the main challenges in this project came about when sourcing birch ply became difficult due to the Russo-Ukrainian War as a majority of birch ply is sourced from Ukraine.
