• New Japandi Kitchen in Chiton

Chiton Japandi Kitchen Renovation

This design provided us with the exciting opportunity to create something truly unique.

The project involved renovating a dwelling that was previously a sales office, with only a small kitchenette, into an inviting home practical for living and entertaining with a full kitchen, butlers pantry and laundry.

The client is an avid collector and curator of Asian artworks and wanted the kitchen to reflect a Japanese theme that would compliment their style and interest balanced with functionality.

  • Feature extraction unit above the island
  • Stained timber doors with zenolite inserts were appointed to emulate the rice paper paneling of traditional Japanese architecture
  • Both mood lighting and task lighting provided in the kitchen
  • The stain on the timber veneer was custom made to match the existing window frames in the dwelling, as well as add the Japanese feel

Being a renovation, this project presented some unexpected challenges.

Design Challenges

  • One of the main obstacles being how we would extract the vapors from the hotplate in the island bench. During the initial consultation the client mentioned there was an inspection point with a large pipe in the slab that was thought could be used for a down draft extraction unit. Upon further investigation this option was ruled out as the pipe was not suitable and the polished concrete floor with heating inside the slab ruled out cutting into the slab at all. This left the client with the option of a canopy rangehood but as the kitchen has a raked ceiling this would have looked out of place.
  • The other challenge was how to make the bulkhead aesthetically pleasing and tie it in with the kitchen.
  • In the Pantry / Laundry area the challenge was creating space to fit all the clients requirements. A sink and separate trough, an integrated dishwasher and concealed washing machine as well as ample storage.
